Since 1978 when I started working for Compugraphic I have witnessed quite an evolution in the prepress slice of the printing industry. Since my days as a service technician with Compugraphic, I have witnessed the advancement of platemaking technology from a multi-stepped process that involved typesetters with RC paper (remember the Compugraphic Editwriter), cameras and film, to today’s technology of imaging directly to the printing plate. This journey has resulted in an abundance of knowledge, in these upcoming articles, I hope to impart as much of that knowledge as possible. Although by no means all-inclusive, this information should prove practical to those who are considering purchasing CTP equipment in the near future.
The information in these articles comes from manufacturers’ brochures, printing periodicals, web sites, our own experience refurbishing CTP equipment, and our many associates in the printing industry. These articles will help you understand the different CtP technologies and equip you to make the best decision by enabling you to ask the right questions. You will then be able to decide what CTP system will best fit your needs and just as importantly, your budget.
Here is a list of some of what we will cover in these articles. The Progression of CTP, The Different CTP Technologies, Violet, Thermal, and Inkjet. Metal or Poly. Platesetter Manufacturer’s and more.
